First drone flight and weather station installation in the Colombian Andes hotspot

MAY 30 2023

By Raquel Martins Lana

The Universidad de Los Andes team organised a field campaign to the Andes hotspot in Tolima, Colombia 5-9 May 2023. The main objectives of this campaign were to engage with the local community, install a weather station, conduct drone flights and obtain footage for a short documentary film about the project.

Directly after the first annual HARMONIZE meeting in Bogotà, a group of HARMONIZE team members, including Rachel Lowe and Raquel Martins Lana (BSC, Spain), Maurício Santos-Vega, María Galvis and Felipe Aramburo (Universidad de los Andes, Colombia), and Cláudia Torres Codeço (Fiocruz, Brazil) travelled to the Colombian Andes hotspot in the state of Tolima. The specific objectives of the campaign were:

1) meet the health sector professionals at the Department of Health located in Ibagué, the capital of Tolima,

2) engage with local communities in Ibagué, El Espinal, Charco Azul, Rovira and Cañon de Combeima,

3) install a weather station in an ecological reserve and conduct drone flights in the different municipalities and 4) obtain footage for a short documentary film to help disseminate HARMONIZE activities.

The team was also accompanied by Jason Brooks, a filmmaker from Spirited Pictures, and Guillermo Alejandro Botero, a drone expert from Drone Solutions.
