A new article from the HARMONIZE team published in Nature Scientific Report
MAY 22 2024
In a new article produced by the HARMONIZE team, the authors used data mining techniques to explore the climatic and sociodemographic drivers that may explain the recent expansion of dengue transmission area within Brazil. Similar trends are being reported in neighbor countries such as Argentina and Peru.
The authors found that the prolonged occurrence of thermal anomalies (calculated using an algorithm developed along the HARMONIZE project), rapid urbanization and higher altitudes are key factors of this expansion of dengue towards new areas, as well as increased incidence in already endemic areas. The article received wide media coverage because its publication coincided with a series of heatwaves and the largest dengue epidemic ever recorded in Brazil.
